Beyond The Numbers: Prioritising Mental Health For Sales Professionals

In today's sales landscape, having a grasp on your mental well-being is the new competitive edge. With the advent of advanced technology and AI, businesses are not failing because of their tools, but rather due to their inner mental state. Sales professionals who struggle with burnout can't tap into their true potential.

Managing our mental health is critical to achieving success in the new world of sales. When you prioritize your mental well-being, you're better equipped to handle stress, stay focused, and make clear, confident decisions. You'll be able to connect better with your customers, build stronger relationships, and close more deals.

While many sales professionals may seem like they have it all together - polished, confident, and always on top of their game,  the truth is, many of us struggle with our mental health behind closed doors.

I know this all too well from personal experience. Throughout my two-decade sales career, I was constantly putting on a brave face for my colleagues and clients. On the outside, I looked polished and like I had it all together, but on the inside, it was a different story.

I was struggling with anxiety and burnout, feeling like I was on a never-ending treadmill of work and stress. It was affecting my ability to perform at my job and was starting to take a toll on my personal life.

It wasn't until I started prioritizing my mental health that things started to turn around for me. I started practicing a morning meditation ritual that began with just 10 minutes in the morning and grew to what I call the golden hour. This was a game changer for me because, for the first time in my life, I began regulating my nervous system and setting it for the day ahead.  I also prioritized taking breaks and spending time in nature, to calm my nervous system throughout my work day.

So, what can you do to prioritize your mental health as a sales professional?

  1. Morning meditation to calm the nervous system and connect with a peaceful day ahead.

Starting your day with meditation can help you reduce stress and anxiety, and set a positive tone for the day ahead. Even just a few minutes of deep breathing and quiet reflection can help you calm your nervous system and cultivate a sense of inner peace. Try waking up a few minutes earlier each day to allow time for meditation, or take a few minutes to sit quietly and focus on your breath before diving into your workday. Starting your day with morning meditation will help you focus and center yourself, putting you in a positive state of mind that sets the tone for the day ahead. Meditation can help alleviate stress and anxiety, ultimately leading to a calmer sense of being..

2. Exercise and move your body to get rid of stress and move energy out.

Exercise is a great way to relieve stress, boost your mood, and improve your overall physical and mental health. Whether you enjoy running, yoga, or weightlifting, find a physical activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine. Not only will it help you manage stress, but it can also boost your confidence, release pent-up energy and in turn boost energy levels, helping you feel more prepared to tackle the demands of your job.

3. Schedule time for breaks for food and rest and renewal.

As a sales professional, it's easy to get caught up in the demands of the job and forget to take breaks. But taking regular breaks throughout the day is critical to maintaining your mental health and productivity. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of sales and forget to take breaks. Schedule time for lunch breaks, coffee breaks, and even short walks or stretches throughout the day. This will help you refresh your mind, renew your energy, and return to your work with a clearer, more focused perspective.

Prioritizing our mental health has countless benefits, including improved productivity, increased focus, and ultimately leading to a happier life. It's essential to remember that taking care of ourselves is not a weakness but a strength. By putting our mental health first, we can achieve greatness in all aspects of our lives.
